The Readability of Reality

Abstract

Why is the physical universe intelligible to human reason? Why does reality present itself not as an opaque, chaotic manifold, but as an orderly, mathematically coherent, and cognitively accessible architecture? This major philosophical monograph investigates the metaphysical problem of cosmic intelligibility and articulates a systematic Qur’anic ontology of cosmic legibility. Challenging physicalist reductions that treat cognition and cosmic order as accidental evolutionary coincidences, the work demonstrates that reality possesses an irreducible semiotic and communicative infrastructure grounded in the concept of Āyāt (ontological signs).

Through comparative philosophical engagement spanning modern philosophy of science, information theory, epistemology, and classical Islamic metaphysics (Kalām and falsafah), the study traces the transition from brute empirical ‘knowability’ to the metaphysical recognition of the ‘sign’. In the Qur’anic cosmology, the natural world does not exist as self-contained brute matter; rather, every natural phenomenon, mathematical constant, and structural regularity functions as an open inscription (kitāb takwīnī). The intelligibility of the cosmos is the epistemic echo of divine intentionality, structured precisely to engage and awaken the human rational intuition (fiṭrah).

Crucially, the monograph establishes an epistemic hierarchy distinguishing superficial empirical observation (al-naẓar al-ẓāhirī) from noetic penetration (baṣīrah). When science confines itself to instrumental measurement, it deciphers the grammar of nature while remaining blind to its semantic referent. By restoring the foundational Qur’anic horizon—wherein scientific inquiry and metaphysical discernment unite in the decipherment of signs—this work recovers an integrated epistemology capable of reconciling mathematical realism, conscious agency, and transcendent meaning.
